Informed Consent Meeting
High School Student and Parent(s) will meet with a research team staff person over secure teleconference, over the phone, or in person (whichever is most convenient). At the meeting, students and parents will have an opportunity to learn about the study and have their questions answered. As part of the consent meeting, we will ask for permission to contact the student’s close friend(s) to see if one of them would like to participate. Students can only participate if both they and their friend choose to participate together and each of their parent(s) consent. Students will receive $5 for this meeting.
Study Surveys
Students will complete an on-line survey that takes 20-30 minutes to complete. The survey will include questions about emotions, relationship with participating friend, and communication with the friend. Seven weeks later, students will complete an emotion questionnaire that takes 10-15 minutes to complete. Students will receive $10 for each survey they complete.
Experience Sampling (on phone)
Students will download a secure app called m-Path and answer very brief questions when prompted by the app for 14 days. The app will send prompts 5-7 a day (not during class). The questions will ask about emotions and contact with your participating friend. Answering each prompt will take 1-3 minutes.
Students will receive $5 each day that they answer at least 80% of questions when prompted.
Students will receive a $10 Bonus if 80% of questions are answered on all 14 days.
